BCELP Local Generation
Due to the extreme cold weather conditions, BCELP generating plants were called upon to run for several days in the month of February. Plants generated on Feb 19th, 20th, 23rd, 24th and 26th between 2 to 14 hours each day. Generation staff estimates that the Utility saved approximately $14,000 versus the cost of buying from the market during that time. BCELP owns 27 MW of local generation at our Water Street and Henry Street plants. Each plant site contains two dual fuel diesel generators that can operate using either Natural Gas or No. 2 Fuel Oil. The Water Street facility was built in the 1980’s and the Henry Street plant was added in 1993. Both plants were updated in 2013 to meet new environmental standards, to install new digital engine controls and to complete scheduled 10 year engine overhaul maintenance. Normally units run during peak usage times during the summer, when market prices are higher than generation cost, or for emergency backup. Additionally, the utility reduces the cost of purchased power by $100,000 each month due to the generation plant |
