Energy Smart Program Visits Twelve 4th Grade Classrooms
BCELP staff visited twelve 4th grade classrooms to teach students about energy efficiency on Friday, October 24th and Thursday, October 30th. During these visits, BCELP used a “choose your own adventure” story to demonstrate the importance of using LED light bulbs and night lights, and the meaning of purchasing Energy Star appliances. With this story, students had to choose the energy saving option when prompted by the story. This provided an interactive learning environment that made learning energy efficiency fun!
The importance of using energy efficient light bulbs – specifically LED bulbs – was also highlighted with the Bay City Electric Energy Bike. By pedaling the bike, students were able to see the physical energy needed to power LED bulbs versus incandescent bulbs. The demonstration showed that pedaling the bike to power incandescent bulbs is a lot harder than what is required to power LED bulbs. Several students from each class were able to try the bike, giving them a hands-on lesson on energy efficiency. Finally, each student was sent home with a bag of goodies. These bags included a Lorax Energy Star booklet, a LED nightlight, a LED 60w equivalent bulb, pencils, temporary tattoos, etc. They were also given a folder of information regarding our Energy Smart program for their parents. Students were thrilled to take home an LED bulb after learning how much energy they save, and they were also excited to teach their family about the importance of energy savings. Moving forward, BCELP will look at doing more of these events in Bay City schools. |
